Kirkpatrick statement on McCain’s Orlando shooting comments

McCain claimed the president was ‘directly responsible’ for the horrific events in Orlando

TEMPE – Ann Kirkpatrick released the following statement in regards to John McCain’s assertion that the president was “directly responsible” for the mass shooting at a Orlando LGBT nightclub that resulted in the deaths of 49 people and another 53 injured:

“Elected leaders have a moral duty to work together to root out terrorism and keep Americans safe. But today, we saw John McCain cross a dangerous line in comments that undermine our Commander in Chief on national security issues — at the very moment the president was in Orlando to comfort victims’ families. It’s difficult to imagine the old John McCain being this reckless with something so serious. John McCain has changed after 33 years in Washington.”

McCain has repeated this same assertion while speaking on the Senate floor:

VIDEO: McCain On Senate Floor: “…This Administration Which Is Directly Responsible In My View For The Ultimate Conclusion Of What Happened In Orlando”. “MCCAIN: My favorite quote of all of this failure of this — that epitomizes the failure of this president is, quote, January 2014, “The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant.” My friends, that statement will live in infamy. That will go down with ‘peace in our time.’ “If a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant.” ‘The analogy we use around here, and I think is accurate.’ ISIS is the same way as a JV team putting on a Laker’s uniform. There has been nothing that I know of more revealing of the attitude and the policies of this administration which is directly responsible in my view for the ultimate conclusion of what happened in Orlando.” [McCain floor speech via CSPAN, 6/14/16]
