Arizona Republic (Editorial) – Ann Kirkpatrick offers something we need: a choice
Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick’s decision to run for U.S. Senate assures there will be a real race for the Senate seat long held by Republican Sen. John McCain. That’s good news for Arizona regardless of your political leanings. Strong candidates with opposing views provide meaningful debate on important issues. Kirkpatrick’s entry assures the election will not be over after the primary. Republicans who find McCain insufficiently conservative may muster a strong primary opponent. While it is not certain he will be the candidate, McCain handily beat GOP primary challenger J.D. Hayworth in 2010. McCain has faced only token opposition from Democrats in his five previous Senate general election races…Kirkpatrick is smart. She’s tough. She’s a good campaigner with a track record in Congress. Her views will provide a counterpoint to McCain’s positions, giving voters a real choice.
